Daniel Ha, co-founder and CEO of Disqus (and this week’s live chat host -- RSVP here), is no stranger to advice-giving (or receiving).
“You can't take more than a few steps through start-up-land without stumbling across another blog post full of entrepreneurship advice,” he wrote recently in Inc.
“It's important to realize that no situation is the same, and advice is only applicable if you understand the entire context. The best way to use advice is to contextualize your own experiences--and then learn by doing.”
Daniel (a self-described Batman enthusiast) has lived out his own “Best Advice.” As a computer science engineering major at UC Davis, he tried the traditional path -- interning at big companies, studying hard -- before dropping out to pursue the startup world full time.
He and his co-founder Jason -- who were classmates in middle school and again at UC Davis -- quickly adopted a philosophy of pushing out new developments to their platform again and again, often based on feedback from real users. As he’s said himself, speed is critical to tech startups, which have the advantage of being able to make changes on the fly (and at a relatively cheap cost).
But so is a sense of community -- which is partly why Daniel and his team applied for and went through the distinguished Y Combinator program. Sure, it enabled them to get some seed funding -- but more importantly, it gave them invaluable mentorship, community, and an opportunity to go all-in on bringing to Disqus to millions of users worldwide.
Today, Disqus is funded by a number of prominent investors -- including Y Combinator, Union Square Ventures, and North Bridge Venture Partners -- as well as angel investors.
And they continue to grow, expand and hire.
Disqus now reaches over 700 million unique visitors every month and spans nearly every topic and type of community imaginable, from “The Hollywood Reporter” website to Wired.com.
The best part is, Daniel is an awesome, down-to-earth guy to talk to, learn from and listen to, regardless where you’re at in your entrepreneurship journey. Want to learn what it’s like to start up with a good friend? What being part of Y Combinator is REALLY all about? Or how a company of Disqus’ growing size continues prioritizing user feedback?
Then join us this Thursday, March 28th at 3 p.m. EST for our hour-long #StartupLab live chat with Daniel, presented by Citi -- and don’t forget to bring some questions for Daniel, who’ll answer them LIVE. We can’t wait!
