Trevor Sumner (this week’s live chat host -- click here to RSVP) is no stranger to the startup world.
In fact, he’s spent 15 years in startups as a product and marketing executive for new technologies and services, from eCommerce and eBusiness in the late 90s to wireless Internet and messaging solutions in the early 2000s to, most recently, consumer platforms -- particularly the world of local, social and mobile marketing platforms in his role as president and co-founder of his own company, LocalVox.
Trevor’s experience working in startups has paid off handsomely; his company was recently named one of the top startups in New York City by Business Insider.
But he’s the first to acknowledge that the startup life, while freeing, isn’t always easy.
“[Startups] are not for everyone--they are exciting, challenging, dynamic, interesting and emotional. They breed tremendous bonds among team members,” he wrote recently in Inc.
“Perhaps more than anything else, they are driven by great and often young people looking to build a career and able to take a risk early on. These are often people with tremendous raw talent in need of mentorship and career advice.”
A few of his key tips for first-time entrepreneurs (and entrepreneurial startup employees):
It’s all about people -- so find a mentor and accelerate your learning, fast. (But be wary of bad mentors and “bozos.”)
Act like an owner--but become a founder.
Be really smart with your money. (As in, be VERY careful with it, so you can keep working at a job or on a company you love.)
And while Trevor’s specialty is understanding technology -- what it looks like today, what it could look like, and how to drive its evolution -- he’s also a proud New Yorker, adventure scuba diver and an avid fisherman who once caught a 600-lb. Black Marlin. (Top that!)
So if you’ve got questions about marketing a local business, creating a business marketing platform, controlling cash flow, or how to find the right mentor to take your career (or company) to the next level, there’s no better person to talk to than Trevor. He might even give up some fishing tips if you ask nicely.
This Tuesday at 3 PM EST is your chance to talk to pick his brain about all things startup and startup technology/marketing-related, during our hour-long #StartupLab live chat presented by Citi. Don’t forget to bring a few questions for Trevor with you to the chat!
