What are the different kinds of forklift accidents?

You don’t need to be a forklift driver or work on a forklift truck in order to become injured by one.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in fact, states, that on average, about one quarter of total workplace transport accidents are forklift truck accidents.

A powerful industrial vehicle such as a forklift is certainly classified as dangerous equipment. So it definitely needs to have strict safety measures in order for the risk of injury of accident to be minimised as much as possible. Unfortunately, there are organisations and people who prioritise efficiency and speed over safety. Too often that is the real reason why accidents occur.

The following are examples of how forklift trucks can cause accidents:

Accident while driving a forklift truck

Unsafe driving condition – when your injury was caused by adverse weather, potholes, or poor surface conditions
Incorrect training – where you were injured due to lack of training, or the wrong training
Defective forklift – where a forklift that was being driven was not fit or safe

Other forklift accidents

Reckless or dangerous driving – injuries that are caused by driving, swerving, or speeding in unregulated areas.
Equipment collision – when a forklift truck hits lockers, machinery, or shelves and this results in you becoming injured, including due to falling debris or objects
Pedestrian collision – when a forklift collides with you

Was someone else at fault for your forklift accident?

We understand that at time it can be hard to know if someone else was at fault for your accident, particularly if you have been working fro some time in the same way without accident or injury. There are regulations and rules that, if not followed or broken, means that somebody else is responsible for your injuries.

There are on licences issued by the government for forklift trucks. But employers are required to ensure that all staff members who operate vehicles and machinery are trained properly according to the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER). That is to ensure that any risk that forklift trucks pose is minimised.

Wherever a forklift truck is being utilised, there should be basic training that is provided and followed, like the L117: Operator training and safe use.

If your employer does not provide you with this training, either via an external licensing body like the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLSA) or internally, and as a result you suffer an injury, then someone else is at fault for the accident. Imagine if you and your coworkers were provided with this training. You might have been able to prevent your accident which resulted in you being injured.

With that in mind, it is also essential to realise that if your employer failed to ensure that your working environment was safe to operate a forklift truck in, or provided a forklift truck that was poorly maintained, then they are to blame for the injuries that you have suffered.
